Climate change means the region receives less rain than it used to and the rains – when they come – are very hard to predict. This places extra pressure on pastoralists in the region, who must travel further to find pasture for their animals, mostly cows. Combined with an influx of small arms in the area, this pressure has intensified competition for resources and violence between local groups such as the Samburu and Turkana peoples.
